Topic
ARC Future Timber Hub Research Showcase - Day 4
Description
-
The University of Canterbury Showcase
ARC Future Timber Hub projects covered will be:
1) The behaviour of critical connections and core wall systems in tall timber buildings
This presentation includes an overview of recent research at the University of Canterbury towards the design of taller timber buildings. The hub co-funded work by Dr. Ottenhaus and PhD Candidate Justin Brown will be presented in more detail. Experimental research on high performance dowelled hold-down connections, screwed connections, and timber-timber connections will be presented in addition to a 2/3 scale four storey cross-laminated timber shear wall testing campaign.
2) Resilient design of structural timber beam-to-column connections in fire condition
This presentation will cover emerging questions about the performance of heavy timber connections in real fires and the need to be able to design heavy timber structures for robust full-structure performance over the full fire duration.
It will include an overview of the research being undertaken at the University of Canterbury to answer some of these questions and presentation of recent fire test results.

Hi there, You are invited to a Zoom webinar. When: Feb 11, 2021 12:00 PM Brisbane Topic: ARC Future Timber Hub Research Showcase - Day 4 Register in advance for this webinar: https://uqz.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_kx324HamQqKiOyDbI6d3Jw Or an H.323/SIP room system: H.323: zoom.aarnet.edu.au Meeting ID: 812 4782 1946 SIP: 81247821946@zoom.aarnet.edu.au After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. ---------- Webinar Speakers Justin Brown (@University of Canterbury) Justin Brown is a PhD candidate at the University of Canterbury. After solidifying his passion for timber engineering while working as a design engineer on mass timber projects in North America, Justin’s focus has shifted from industry to research to continue the advancement of tall wood seismic design. His research has focussed on the seismic design of CLT connections and post-tensioned and conventional CLT shear-wall behaviour. Justin is working on the project titled “The behaviour of critical connections and core-wall systems for tall timber buildings” which is lead by Assoc. Prof. Minghao Li. Paul Horne (@University of Canterbury) Paul Horne practiced as a structural engineer then a fire engineer for four and a half years at Aurecon where worked on a wide range of new and existing buildings including offices, apartments, sports facilities, schools and hospitals. Seeing many structural-fire questions in construction he decided to investigate a few of these himself. He is currently a PhD student at the University of Canterbury researching the performance of seismically resilient heavy timber frame structures perform in real fires. His research focuses on the the response of beam-column connections in fire with a focus on low-damage post-tensioned connections and analysing connections accounting for the mechanical response of these connections over the full duration of the fire. Associate Professor Minghao Li, Dr Lisa Ottenhaus, Associate Professor Anthony Abu (@University of Canterbury)
